Thematic and Historical Cartography
Cabo Verde has a rich body of thematic cartography, some of which is of considerable historical value, including topographic, agro-ecological, vegetation, geological, and soil maps. Among the most significant are the Carta de Cabo Verde, also known as Carta Militar de Portugal - Província de Cabo Verde (Topographic Map of Cabo Verde), at a scale of 1:25,000, published between 1968 and 1979, and the Carta de Zonagem Agro-Ecológica e da Vegetação de Cabo Verde (Agro-Ecological Zoning and Vegetation Map of Cabo Verde), at a scale of 1:50,000 (1:25,000 for Brava), published between 1986 and 1999.
Another historical cartographic source is the Carta Agrícola da Província de Cabo Verde (Agricultural Map of Cabo Verde), produced during the 1950s. Published on an island-by-island basis and generally at a scale of 1:100,000 (with the exception of São Vicente, Santa Luzia, and Brava), it provides evidence for reconstructing historical land-use patterns across the archipelago.
Carta de Zonagem Agro-Ecológica e da Vegetação de Cabo Verde
The Carta de Zonagem Agro-Ecológica e da Vegetação de Cabo Verde was published in the Revista do Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical, GARCIA DE ORTA - Série de Botânica, Lisboa. Each volume comprises a detailed descriptive text, accompanied by a colour map. The Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical (IICT) was dissolved in 2015, with its mission, responsibilities, and heritage transferred to the Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa). Today, the Specialized Units of the Museus e Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical of the ULisboa preserve the complete and extensive GARCIA DE ORTA collection.
